James has a background in molecular biology and biochemistry and has held fellowships from BBSRC (David Phillips), the Royal Society (Industry) and Oracle. His research uses multi-omics and computational approaches to understand anaerobic microbial community dynamics for resource recovery. He collaborates closely with Yorkshire Water (including as PI for a BBSRC Prosperity Partnership and separate Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership) in addition to working on interdisciplinary projects with other UK water- and waste-processing companies. He is Co-I on an EPSRC Prosperity Partnership with Croda and ongoing projects with Oxford Nanopore Technologies. He is currently Head of Department for Biology at the University of York.
Sarah is a senior postdoc within CEAD and an SSI fellow. Her research involves the use of big data analyses to interrogate and understand microbial community interactions in AD. She uses multi-omic approaches to achieve this through the use of metagenomics and metabolomics. She is a co-lead of the EBnet Bioinformatics working group and has a keen interest in the development and delivery of bioinformatics training resources that are FAIR compliant. She also lectures on reproducible data analysis and statistics at the University of York at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Matt is a EPSRC Innovation Fellow in CEAD. His interest covers the development of industrial biotechnology processes which utilise microbial communities with the ability to perform dark fermentation and anaerobic digestion. He has a particular interest in the use of wastewaters and cereals straws as feedstocks for the production of biohydrogen, biomethane, electricity and bioplastics. His group studies the utilisation of bacteria and fungi, in controlled anaerobic environments, to achieve those goals.
