The Team
James Chong is a Royal Society Industry Fellow and Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of York. His research uses multi-omics and computational approaches to understand microbial community dynamics. He collaborates closely with Yorkshire Water in addition to working on interdisciplinary projects with other UK water and waste processing companies. James is a member of the Steering Group for BioVale's AD Special Interest Group, Impact Champion for Biology at York as well as leading the EBNet Working Group “Bioinformatics Training for Microbial Environmental Biotechnologies“. He is currently co-lead for YESI’s Food, Water & Waste Theme. James is a 2023 Oracle Research Fellow.
Dr Matthew Reilly
Matt is a EPSRC Innovation Fellow in CEAD. His interest covers the development of industrial biotechnology processes which utilise microbial communities with the ability to perform dark fermentation and anaerobic digestion. These biological processes can be used to remove pollutants from waste and for the production of chemicals and fuels from biomass. He has a particular interest in the use of wastewaters and cereals straws as feedstocks for the production of biohydrogen, biomethane, electricity and bioplastics. His group studies the utilisation of bacteria and fungi, in controlled anaerobic environments, to achieve those goals.
