CEAD
CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE FOR ANAEROBIC DIGESTION
CEAD is based at the University of York and Yorkshire Water’s Naburn site, as part of a £1.2m project to enable greater understanding of the processes behind anaerobic digestion (AD).
CEAD aims to transform AD performance, strengthen the University's bio/circular economy research portfolio, by contributing to the BioYorkshire initiative and contribute to the region’s aspiration to become carbon neutral.
“I'm very excited that a long-term partnership has developed with Yorkshire Water. This new project represents an important opportunity to develop both our fundamental understanding of the biology underpinning anaerobic digestion and how we translate this knowledge into real-world applications, as a critical part of the UK/global drive towards net zero.” Professor James Chong Director of CEAD
SYSTEM-60
CEAD houses 60 five-litre automatically fed, temperature controlled anaerobic digesters at the University of York
RESEARCH
We use multi-omics approaches to understand how anaerobic microbial communities interact and respond to their environment
BIOINFORMATICS
We develop bespoke pipelines for the analysis of large multi-omic datasets, including metagenomics and metabolomics to interrogate the dynamics of microbial consortia involved in AD
